    New York-listed DHT Holdings has confirmed broker reports that it has snapped up a modern VLCC to replace older ships it has sold. The company said it is paying $107m for a scrubber-fitted ship built in 2018 at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Oil slick seen near blaze-hit dark fleet tanker, says Greenpeace This is the 319,000-dwt Papalemos, controlled by Greece’s Enesel, according to brokers cited by TradeWinds earlier this week. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered towards the end of the third quarter. The acquisition will be financed through DHT’s available liquidity and projected mortgage debt. “The vessel was built to a high specification by its current owner and is fitted with an exhaust gas cleaning system. The acquisition will improve DHT’s age profile and will further improve the DHT fleet’s efficiency metrics,” the company said. The deal will bring DHT’s fleet to 27 VLCCs. Brokers had reported a sale at $108m, but sources told TradeWinds the transaction was still in the final stages and the price could come down a little. Chief executive Svein Moxnes Harfjeld said: “We are always looking for opportunities with the intent of improving earnings per share for our shareholders." ‘Danger of the dark fleet’: Frontline chief discusses ‘nightmare’ tanker collision and jamming claims “This is a sister of vessels built by us in 2018, a design with large carrying capacity and premium earning capabilities, well suited for the trading patterns of our key customers,” he added. “We believe this to be a fitting addition to our fleet, replacing some of the earnings capacity that has been divested this year, delivering into a market with attractive prospects,” the CEO said. Since December, DHT has sold three VLCCs built in 2006 and 2011. Fearnley Securities said the sale is a “rare transaction” for a modern VLCC. “Dissecting the price and adjusting $3m for scrubber and $2m for larger carrying capacity, the acquisition marks a 3% upside to our asset values,” added analysts Fredrik Dybwad and Nils Thommesen. Chevron and Petrobras tied down VLCC term charter cover before Middle East rate explosion “Moreover, the price is done above the newbuilding parity curve and implies a breakeven rate in the $45,000-$52,000 per day range, depending on assumptions,” they said. VLCC rates jumped another 12% on Thursday from the Middle East Gulf to China, hitting $65,000 for modern scrubber-fitted ships, due to war risks in the region. “The price might raise eyebrows considering DHT’s historically conservative approach, but with a healthy market outlook, we argue the acquisition is a prudent move in renewing the fleet and boosting earnings capacity,” the duo added. The Papalemos purchase is the second deal in as many years between DHT and Enesel. In 2023, DHT spent $94.5m to acquire the 319,200-dwt Maria P Lemos (built 2018) from the Greek owner. Copyright.     With a drop of $1.2 since mid-May, roughly all of the last half-year's gain has been shaved off. I consider the stock to be reasonable to monitor and given the drop in oil prices and stable stocks in the USA, I think this will fall a little more before we enter the autumn's growing needs. Is it cheap enough, or sit on the fence further?
