- ·19.11.If anyone was wondering about today's rise, it is probably due to an unexpected guest suddenly appearing on stage at today's main keynote for Unite 2025 in Barcelona (Unity's annual developer conference): Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of arch-rival Epic Games, the developer behind Unreal Engine, which owns the other part of the market (high end - especially console and PC games). But Sweeney is so pleased with Unity's new in-app purchase API that he revealed it will now also be integrated into Unreal Engine - which thus gives game developers the opportunity to offer microtransactions/in-game purchases, completely bypassing Apple's (and Google's) payment system - so game developers can avoid giving up 15% in fees that way, as well as benefit from a one-stop-shop where all the underlying technical aspects are easily handled. Some might remember that for many years there have been major lawsuits between Epic Games and Apple (and Google), after they, with an update to the mega-hit Fortnite (which they developed first party in Unreal Engine), suddenly began offering in-app purchases outside of the then-required payment systems in app stores. Fortnite was removed from app stores, but ultimately won the questions and thereby forced Apple (and Google) to open up. Precisely these new rules enable this product from Unity. In addition, Unity games can now be published directly within Fortnite itself - which is thus developing into a Roblox-like experience, where users can develop mini-games/extensions themselves and earn money directly from them.

Unity's new in-app purchase addition is a perfect example of a service only Unity can offer - natively and deeply integrated into the engine game devs already use. For now, just a value-add, but with more efforts like it, $U can turn it into another meaningful product over time.

But they don't dare replace Unity for 3rd party developers yet.
