It says I have GAV at 239 but when the stock is at 242 I am in negative return. I don't quite understand it.
If you, as a Norwegian investor, buy an American stock like Take-Two Interactive (TTWO), you get a double exposure: The stock price in USD The exchange rate USD/NOK Your return in NOK will be approximately: Return in NOK ≈ (change in stock price in USD) × (change in USD/NOK) Example: You buy TTWO at 100 USD USD/NOK is 10.00 The investment costs you 1 000 NOK Scenario A – positive for you: TTWO goes up 20 % → 120 USD USD strengthens against NOK: 10 → 11 The value becomes 120 × 11 = 1 320 NOK Return: +32 % Scenario B – the stock goes up, but the currency works against you: TTWO goes up 20 % → 120 USD USD weakens: 10 → 9 The value becomes 120 × 9 = 1 080 NOK Return: only +8 % So yes: A Norwegian investor in TTWO ideally wants: ✅ TTWO up in USD ✅ USD stronger against NOK (higher USD/NOK) And conversely: ❌ Stronger NOK / weaker USD can eat up parts of the stock gain ❌ A stock can actually rise in the USA, but yield a negative return measured in NOK if the dollar falls enough A small clarification: You do not "invest" directly in USD in the same way as with a currency purchase, but you get a currency exposure because the stock is priced in dollars and you have to convert back to NOK when you realize the investment. For TTWO-specific cases, this is extra relevant because many Norwegian investors think about the return in NOK, while the company reports and is priced in USD.
