- ·2 päivää sittenShareholders in Jyske Bank are poorly positioned if a banking crisis occurs. To put it bluntly, I am comparing some figures from the 2025 annual report with corresponding figures from Kreditbanken's 2025 annual report: Kreditbanken's figures are in million DKK and Jyske Bank's in billion DKK. Common Equity Tier 1 capital: 1053 vs 40.1. Risk exposure: 3332 vs 249.3. Balance sheet: 7649 vs 777.1. Common Equity Tier 1 capital is the part of shareholders' equity that may be included in the bank's solvency calculation (capital statement). Kreditbanken fulfills all capital requirements through equity, while Jyske Bank covers it by taking out three variants of loans (called Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3). In a crisis, equity disappears before loan capital is touched. In practice, usually only equity is affected. By dividing Common Equity Tier 1 capital by risk exposure, it is seen that Kreditbanken's shareholders are twice as well off as Jyske Bank's shareholders. (The difference becomes even more stark if divided by the balance sheet instead.) Specifically, Common Equity Tier 1 capital divided by risk exposure is just under 32 % for Kreditbanken, but only approx. 16 % for Jyske Bank. To put it popularly, there are thus twice as many shoulders to spread the crisis across relative to the size of the banks. And that is realistic enough: Jyske Bank receives a great many visits from the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority! As a consequence of this, I have sold almost 99 % of the Jyske Bank shares that I held at the beginning of 2023. This is put bluntly to highlight the viewpoint. I readily concede that Jyske Bank took several good initiatives under Anders Dam as CEO. And the choice of Kreditbanken for comparison provides the sharpest contrast. (But the other small banks are also well-capitalized.) Jyske Bank's share price has been driven up too high compared to the share prices of non-SIFI banks.now there isn't going to be a crisis this year either... Things are going fine, they are shoveling 5 billion in.
- ·25.9.Johnny Madsen from Formue- og investeringspleje has taken the top off and invested in bonds. Are there anyone else here who has taken the top off?No indeed, upcoming rising interest rates increase earnings, large buyback program increases value for us remaining shareholders !! By the way, listen to Jens Løgstrup in milli. Klubben ☺️. I am holding my shares for a long time yet as things look now...
- ·20.9.ONLY A FOOL IGNORES A SHARE BUYBACK PROGRAM – PART II When I expect in mid-November to let the cash portion fall from 22% to 0%, I will at that time let the algorithms determine which specific bank shares I will expand the portfolio with. However, I have just calibrated the variables included in the weights. It is becoming increasingly evident that the dividend policy – including primarily the payout ratio and the choice between dividend and share buyback – should be weighted relatively higher than previously done. I have looked closer at Jyske Bank, where in the budgets for the coming 10 years I have incorporated an assumption that the bank maintains a share buyback program of 3 billion kr. p.a., and where K/I and P/E are maintained at current levels. Before I conclude on the exercise, I will again – also in this context – point out the importance of my favorite topic: "Compound interest". When it becomes too complex, either due to too high a return or too long a time horizon, most of us ordinary mortals cannot grasp the otherwise completely factual calculations in our heads. When they are put on paper (or probably actually Excel), the causalities begin to reveal themselves. I have used relatively conservative budget assumptions, which mean that the bottom line over the 10 years alone improves by approx. 26%. A new financial crisis has not been included – and I am aware that the world naturally does not develop linearly – but 26% over a 10-year period is conservative in my world – and in reality, I also expect significantly more. Without revealing the full content, the number of Jyske Bank shares will have fallen from the current approx. 58 million units to approx. 34.5 million units. In an "all else being equal situation" (same equity, same earnings, same key figures, etc.), the share buyback program will thus have ensured a 68% increase in the price of the individual Jyske Bank share. And then only the value of the 3 billion kr. p.a. of the profit that goes to share buybacks has been taken into account. The remaining 2-3 billion kr. go to dividends and equity consolidation. A reinvestment of the annual dividends can make the snowball run even faster for the individual investor. It is deliberate that I do not mention what price the analysis shows the Jyske Bank share at in 10 years. There are too many variables, and the result is too good….
- ·12.9.SISSY BOY! I know it, and I'm ashamed. For the first time in a very long series of years, I have gone to cash with a significant portion of my holdings. Across my portfolios, I now have approx. 22% on the sidelines. As an investor who admits to agreeing with almost everything Warren Buffett has stated, I am aware that I am violating one of the very fundamental tenets: "time in the market beats timing the market". And this almost blasphemous move for me is not even based on a sober analysis – it is solely based on gut feeling. The fact is that the banks (in which I have approx. 85% of my portfolio) continue to thrive almost better than ever. Interest rates are even rising, so the earnings engine should be able to run even faster in Q3 and Q4 than in the first half of the year. Capital ratios are high – and in most cases far above target, even though Danish banks, for unknown reasons, are subject to higher requirements than their European competitors. There is also no prospect of significant losses on either corporate or private customers as far as the eye can see. So everything indicates that Danish banks are in a "sweet spot" these years. And despite that, I have chosen to sell (a little) off my bank shares. Not because I believe there is any specific bad news coming for this industry, but solely because I don't like the cloud formations that are forming over geopolitics – and the way both domestic and foreign problems are handled in "God's own country". We all remember the bully from the schoolyard who managed to terrorize everyone around him until the point where he was challenged - either by calling his bluff or by totally ignoring him. In this specific situation, the bluff has been called many times and ignoring is not an option, as the bully constantly demands attention. And now we are heading directly towards a midterm election on Nov. 3, which could very well end in a humiliating defeat for the Republicans. A defeat for which there is no empirical evidence that it will be accepted. Meanwhile, interest rates and oil prices are rising. It looks like defeat after defeat in the coming months – and in my opinion, there is a risk that the responses will become more and more panicked. When we reach mid-November and all my fears are proven wrong, my cash will enter the stock market again – and most likely in bank shares. I hope that I will buy at a higher price than I sold for. Good luck out there 😊I honestly don't quite know why you're fuming at the banks. It still looks fine, after all.
- ·11.9.If one were currently to invest in either Jyske Bank or Ringkøbing Landbobank, what would speak for and against the two? They are quite similar technically speaking, but both have fluctuated a bit up and down in the last two weeks. I would perhaps have kept an eye on it to see about the rise for them in the last two days because both might be at a small peak now. In the long run, I would have trouble deciding. (Own Jysk and am keeping it for the time being.)
