- ·8.8.HDFC Bank is India's largest private bank and represents an attractive risk/reward case at current levels. The bank competes with strong players like ICICI Bank, and together they control around 25–30 percent of India's lending and deposit market. At the same time, the leading private banks continue to gain market share from state-owned banks, which provides a long-term structural growth foundation. India is among the world's fastest-growing major economies, driven by increasing purchasing power, urbanization, digitalization, and rising credit demand. HDFC Bank is well-positioned to benefit from this development through its strong brand name, extensive distribution network with over 9,600 branches, and a very large customer base. At the same time, the bank distinguishes itself with massive social responsibility – through its Parivartan program, they have reached over 107 million people, and they are taking a leading role in the green transition with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2032. The bank's underlying operations remain solid. Loans grew by around 15 percent and deposits by over 13 percent in the last quarter. Credit risk is low, with non-performing loans at around 1.2 percent, while capital adequacy is among the strongest in the sector. This provides the bank with both financial robustness and capacity for further growth. The main concern in the market is pressure on net interest margins after the merger with HDFC Ltd., which has contributed to a lower valuation than historically. HDFC Bank currently trades at around 14–15 times earnings and 1.8 times book value, while the bank delivers approximately 14 percent return on equity. For a market leader with low credit risk and exposure to Indian growth, this appears attractive. The case largely depends on whether ROE can move back towards 16–18 percent as merger synergies materialize. A risk that should also be mentioned is currency. For Norwegian investors, the return will be affected by the development of Indian rupees against Norwegian kroner. Although HDFC Bank can deliver strong growth in local currency, a weaker rupee could reduce the return measured in Norwegian kroner. At current levels, HDFC Bank appears to be an asymmetric investment case. The downside seems limited by the bank's dominant market position, solid balance sheet, and strong capitalization, while the upside could be significant if margins improve and India continues its strong economic growth. Norwegian banks are known as stable dividend machines with very low risk, but they also have limited long-term multiple expansion. HDFC offers an asymmetric profile where the downside is protected by market dominance, while the upside is significantly higher due to faster underlying demand for financial services.I have personally bought a smaller position in HDFC and ICICI to be exposed to India recently after the pullback.
- ·6.4.I think March's decline is predominantly related to India being highly exposed to Middle Eastern oil and natural gas, but does anyone know if this alone is the reason, or if there are other factors at play as well? The oil shock was probably the main driver (and still is), but it was reinforced by currency depreciation, interest rate fears, merger problems with the parent company, and significant capital flight from foreign funds.
- ·28.9.2025I actually had HDFC Bank ADR on my radar as I could see it as a candidate for a place in my portfolio as I want something stable and safe, and something that can be in my portfolio for a long time without me having to touch it, but when I heard that India is buying oil from Russia, I just have to say that my moral compass said no, and I don't really care if I can get +100% or more in return, I don't want to support a country that can finance their brutal war in Ukraine, I want peace to come, and when there is peace in this world, I can return to HDFC Bank ADR.The returns have been quite meager over the past several years, so it doesn't cost you anything to follow your moral compass - quite the opposite.
- ·17.9.2025Andreas Steno was yesterday, in the millionaires' club, extremely negative about the Indian economy. Because they are being punished for their purchase of oil from Russia. If you are long-term, shouldn't you take a big view of that kind of thing? What do you others think about the Indian economy and HDFC?I understand the concerns about the geopolitical challenges India faces, especially when it comes to oil imports from Russia. But as you mention, as a long-term investor, you may choose to ignore the short-term risks. India is still one of the largest growth markets globally, and it is an economy with a young population that drives consumption and innovation. HDFC is also a solid financial company that has shown stability over time. I think that in the longer term it may be a good idea to keep an eye on the macroeconomic trends, but at the same time not to be deterred by temporary challenges if the fundamentals are still strong
