·10 t sittenWorld's first phase 2 study of Novo Nordisk's oral semaglutide for Parkinson's disease reaches planned completion — results awaited MOST-ABLE is a phase 2, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled study with 99 patients across eight Japanese research centers. The study compares oral semaglutide in doses of 7 mg and 14 mg with placebo. Participants were treated for 36 weeks followed by a 12-week washout period, and the primary endpoint assesses motor function at week 48. By evaluating motor symptoms without Parkinson's medication after the washout period, the intention is to investigate whether any observed effect can persist beyond the active treatment. This is relevant for assessing a possible disease-modifying effect rather than a purely symptomatic effect. The study is led by researchers at Osaka University and funded by Japan's Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). It is an investigator-initiated study, while Novo Nordisk has supplied the investigational drug and placebo. Recruitment took place from November 2023 to September 2024. The published study protocol states that the collection of clinical data was expected to be completed in November–December 2025, and the main study was expected to be completed in March 2026. An optional follow-up assessment is expected to be completed in November 2026. If MOST-ABLE shows a meaningful disease-modifying signal in Parkinson's disease, and ISAP (University of Oxford) shows convincing effects on Alzheimer's-related biology, the implications for semaglutide's potential in neurodegenerative diseases could be very significant.They have failed with Alzheimer's. Eli Lilly is an alternative. It has also fallen somewhat recently but probably has better prospects than Novo Nordisk, I think. However, on the other hand, the valuation is probably accordingly.
