- 22.10.850 new F35 fighters are being ordered, this cannot be Bad for Lockheed Martin either https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/lockheed-pentagon-strike-initial-deal-produce-850-f-35-jets-2026-10-22/
- ·22.10.Q3: A strong financial report with higher growth, record-high order backlog, and upgraded guidance. Revenue: 20.7 billion USD, +11% year-over-year. Expectation: approx. 20.5 billion USD. EPS (earnings per share): 7.97 USD vs. expected approx. 7.52 USD. Net income: 1.85 billion USD vs. 1.62 billion USD last year, an increase of 14%. Free cash flow: 3.0 billion USD vs. 3.35 billion USD last year – a negative point despite the strong earnings. Order backlog: Record at 292 billion USD, up from 230 billion USD in the previous quarter. Guidance upgraded: Second consecutive upgrade for both revenue, EPS, and free cash flow. Stock reaction: The stock rose around 3–5% in pre-market trading after the report.
- ·14.9.Why is progress so sluggish for both the American and European defense industry when the conflict level in the world is constantly increasing, the USA has expended large quantities of weapons, Ukraine has great needs, and NATO countries are fully rearming? Demand seems endless right now.One reason could be the fat cat syndrome. The F35 program is historically expensive, and in light of the war in Ukraine, it may be the culmination of the old and now outdated norm that expensive military equipment = high security. With cheap technology and drone swarms, expensive defense equipment becomes less valuable because there are no ready defenses. Lockheed Martin has been penalized because they did not win the F47 procurement for USAF and because there is uncertainty regarding the future value of expensive aircraft. Will it be better to have many, somewhat cheaper, aircraft and swarms of drones? This thus leads to concern over both margins and revenue for a company that has done astronomically well thanks to the exceptionally expensive F35 program. The unit price is estimated to still be around 82-85 million USD. Should the company on the other hand develop a good and cheap pilotless platform or win a procurement, there is upside. But the uncertainty around whether the company can do more than develop platforms that exceed budget by 183 billion USD should be a major reason why it has performed so poorly lately. Look e.g. at Denmark which is sitting on F35s. When that purchase decision was made, it was a given that they should have "the most expensive and best" from the USA. Compare that to what a Danish (or Norwegian) fighter procurement from scratch would look like today =) Regarding the sector as a whole, I agree that I do not understand the sluggishness, but it is likely that the stock market is short-sighted. Long-term, this supercycle in defense investments will pay off, I believe. Time in the market will beat timing in the market so one might want to have a couple of defense investments, I figure.
