anyone who can explain this to me. it applies to other stocks as well, for that matter. when an order book (like right now) changes all the time, without any sales. it sort of goes in a circle and is without a doubt some computers doing something. What is actually happening in practice, can anyone explain it to me?

It is a sharp and completely correct observation. When you see an order book flicker and change constantly in a circle without actual sales, you are looking directly at algorithmic trading (High-Frequency Trading or HFT). These are lightning-fast computers battling each other in milliseconds. In practice, three primary things are happening behind the scenes: 1. Market Making (Automated pricers) The most common and completely legal reason is market makers. These are financial houses committed to always providing both a bid price and an ask price to keep the market moving. • Why do they change? The computer monitors underlying assets (e.g., futures, currencies, or related stocks). If the price of commodities or related indexes moves a microscopic bit, the computer instantly withdraws its orders and places them back at a new, adjusted price. This happens thousands of times per second. 2. "Ping-ing" and price discovery The algorithms are constantly trying to figure out what other computers (and humans) are willing to pay. • The computer sends a small buy or sell order close to the current market price. • If no one bites within a few milliseconds, the order is deleted and a new one is placed one "tick" (the smallest possible price jump) away. This creates a visual illusion that the order book is breathing or running in circles. 3. Spoofing and Layering (Market manipulation) Sometimes the behavior is on the edge of the law or outright illegal (called spoofing or layering). • The tactic: An algorithm actually wants to sell a stock. To push the price up, the computer suddenly places a series of massive buy orders into the book just below the current price. • The illusion: Other computers see this and think: "Wow, there is massive demand, the price must be going up!". They now start buying. • The trap springs: The split second the price is pushed up, the manipulator sells their real shares at the higher price – and instantly deletes all the fake buy orders before they even manage to be traded. Then the cycle starts over.
