This is the first step towards a possible recall of all affected cars of the same model. There are 174,290 of that model, the news agencies Reuters, Bloomberg and BBC write. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received nine specific complaints about the doors on the 2021 Model Y, one of the Elon Musk-led company's best-selling car models. In four cases, the car owners had to break the window to get the children out. "Especially concerning in emergency situations" The Bloomberg news agency has uncovered a series of cases in which people were injured or died because they were unable to open the doors of their Tesla after it lost power, especially after accidents. According to Bloomberg, since 2018, the NHTSA has received more than 140 customer complaints about doors that were stuck or could not be opened on various Tesla models. The investigation of the nine cases focuses on "how the electronic door locks work" from the outside of the car when the battery on it has not received sufficient power. “Being trapped in a vehicle is a particular concern in emergency situations, such as when children are trapped in a hot vehicle,” the NHTSA said. It will “take additional action as needed.” The agency is also monitoring any additional reports of entrapment, according to the Financial Times. In most reported cases, the problem with the electronic door lock occurred when parents got out of the car and were then unable to open the door and remove the child from the back seat. The doors can technically be opened from the inside, but the NHTSA said the children may have been unable to reach the manual handles. The Tesla manual describes ways to restore power to the electronic door locks so they can be opened from the outside. However, according to the NHTSA, the incidents show that this is not a method that Tesla owners are familiar with. The Model Y is the third best-selling car model in Denmark this year despite Tesla's significant decline at home and in Europe after CEO and major owner Elon Musk's entry into the right-wing political scene in the US. In the period January-August, 3,674 Model Ys were sold in Denmark, corresponding to 3.2 percent of total sales of newly registered cars. In 2024, the Model Y was the best-selling car model in Denmark. 10,473 of it were sold here, corresponding to 6.1 percent of total new car sales, according to figures from the industry organization Mobility Denmark (formerly De Danske Bilimportører). Ban on electronic door locks looming Tesla has been using electronic door locks since the Model S, which was launched in 2012. It created a completely new car design that other car brands have since copied, but even then, questions were raised about its safety. Tesla has not commented on the NHTSA investigation, which is not the first that the NHTSA has conducted of Tesla. The authority is also currently investigating complaints about the American electric car manufacturer's autonomous driving system. Tesla is no longer the world's largest electric car maker. That crown has been taken over by China's BYD after Tesla's sales plummeted in many parts of the world despite an otherwise generally growing sale of electric cars. Elon Musk has steered Tesla's focus towards self-driving taxis and humanoid robots, but it is still electric car sales that are the core of Tesla's business. In the United States, Tesla's market share fell to its lowest in eight years in August. Bloomberg's investigation has shown that complaints have also been filed with the NHTSA about doors that do not work on Model S cars from 2012, Model 3 cars from 2023 and Model Y cars from 2020, 2022 and 2023.
