The company has attracted value-oriented investors like Li Lu, partly due to the long-term transition from free listening to paid subscriptions in the Chinese market. At the same time, the valuation is low compared to Spotify. Tencent Music trades around 10–12x P/E and approx. 10x EV/FCF, while Spotify is around 30x P/E and over 20x EV/FCF. Spotify admittedly has higher expected growth, but the market also pays significantly more for this growth. The stock fell around 12 percent after the quarterly figures, partly due to concerns about weaker organic growth and costs related to Ximalaya. The company delivered around 6 percent revenue growth, while EPS was approximately flat due to higher costs and integration expenses. At the same time, Tencent Music maintains a strong gross margin of 44.4 percent and has a very solid financial position. With a starting multiple of around 10x, operational growth of approximately 6 percent, and support from share buybacks, the implicit payback period could be relatively short – potentially around 6–7 years with continued profitable growth.Growth in subscriptions probably drives the share price more than profitability, since profitability is already in place.
