After the Q2 reports, we are starting to see clearer signs that Big Tech's enormous AI investments are actually beginning to yield results. Microsoft Azure grew 43 % and Google Cloud a full 82 % YoY, while AWS increased revenue by 37 %. This strengthens the thesis that the high capex is not just a cost, but is starting to transform into strong growth in cloud and AI. Meta, however, is still in the investment-heavy phase. Q2 revenues increased strongly by 28 % to 60.8 billion dollars, but capex simultaneously amounted to a full 31.1 billion dollars. This caused free cash flow to fall to only 784 million dollars. The operating margin also fell from 43 % to 31 %, even though the result was burdened by, among other things, legal costs and severance payments. The interesting thing, therefore, is that Meta's underlying business is still growing strongly while the company is building up its AI infrastructure. Ad impressions increased 14 % and the average price per ad rose 12 %, which shows that the core business still has good momentum. My thesis is therefore that Meta could be in a similar investment phase to what Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have been in: cash flow is short-term pressured by enormous capex, but if the investments lead to higher engagement, better advertising, and new AI revenues, the return could come later. Therefore, I think Meta becomes particularly interesting if the stock trades around 18–20x future earnings. The big risk, however, is that the AI investments do not generate a sufficiently high return to justify the significantly increased capital base.

From ChatGPT I estimate the probabilities approximately at 20 % bear / 55 % base / 25 % bull. Wall Street is also relatively bullish: a current average from 39 analysts is around $812, with a range from $622 to $1,015. Why I am still positive Meta actually delivered a very strong top line in Q2: * Revenue: $60.8 billion * Growth: +28 % * Ad impressions: +14 % * Price per ad: +12 % * 3.60 billion daily users in Family of Apps * AI is already improving the ads' effectiveness. The interesting thing is that AI is not just a future story at Meta. AI is already helping the existing ad business with targeting, recommendations, and pricing. But here lies the big risk Meta spends extremely much on AI infrastructure. 2026 CapEx is now expected at $130–145 billion. That is enormous. Q2 alone Meta had CapEx of $31.1 billion, while free cash flow was only $784 million. In my opinion, that is the most important thing to keep an eye on for the next year. If Meta can show: "We are spending $130–145 billion, but the investment yields higher ad revenues and stronger earnings" then the stock can easily move towards $900–950. If the market, on the other hand, starts to think: "Meta is spending enormous amounts on AI, but the return is not coming fast enough" then the stock could well fall towards $580–620. My $820 price target I actually think $820 is more interesting than $900 as a professional base-case target. That roughly corresponds to Wall Street's average valuation and does not require Meta to get an extreme AI premium. At the same time, there are already analysts around $775–835, while some bullish valuations are higher. My conclusion I would be a buyer of META at the current level, but not go all-in. If you already own the 12 Meta shares you previously mentioned, I would personally hold them. My expected 12-month return in the base case is approximately +20–25 %, and I think the risk/return looks better than many other megacap tech stocks right now. My most important level: 🎯 $820 Bull: $950 Bear: $580 Base: $820 The next truly decisive point will be whether Meta can make earnings grow faster than AI expenses in the coming quarters. That is where I believe the next big price movement will be decided.

do we hit 650 before 2027?
    1 päivä sitten
Probably not, EPS will be too low next quarter due to AI and legal fees. Still a strong buy if your holding period is over 2 years. 2027 is when it is estimated that EPS growth reaccelerates.

To someone who considers META a sell right now: Could I get an explanation as to why you view the stock negatively? What is the biggest concern? What do you think people like me have missed? Genuinely interested!

The stock prize is suppressed because AI investments lower EPS now and in the coming quarters. Still revenue is growing 28% yoy. AI investments is the driver behind revenue acceleration. Also there is the regulatory risk in the US right now regarding addiction on IG reels, but that will pass as they always do. Basically all the downsides are short term and the market will appreciate the AI investments only when it shows in the EPS. Meta is treated differently from the other capex spenders because it doesnt have a cloud business, so investors cant calculate precise ROI. Meta says in their earnings call that they have the option to rent out compute if they dont need it, but find more attractive returns using it themselves. As it is now I see Meta as a loaded spring waiting for Wallstreets approval. Same was with google and amazon.
