On Thursday, the parties held a kick-off meeting in Narvik, where they finalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking the start of continued cooperation on the shipment of copper and iron ore concentrates. The agreement confirms that Viscaria will ship its copper concentrate via the Narvik Bulk Terminal and the Port of Narvik, creating an efficient and long-term sustainable logistics solution. This represents an important step in securing a robust logistics chain ahead of the upcoming start of production. Present in Narvik were Thomas Nordmark, Logistics and Infrastructure Manager at Viscaria, together with Børge Edvardsen Klingan, CEO of the Port of Narvik, and Rolf Gundersen, CEO of Narvik Bulk Terminal. Viscaria’s CEO, Jörgen Olsson, participated remotely during the day. Also taking part were Niclas Niemi, Project Manager for Viscaria’s processing plant, and Kenth Kvitvik, Project and Property Manager at the Port of Narvik. During the meeting, the overall timeline for the transports was outlined. The unloading station, storage facilities and shipping terminal are planned to be completed by the end of 2027, with shipments of copper and iron ore concentrates scheduled to commence in 2028. The Port of Narvik is one of Norway’s largest ports by tonnage and serves as a central logistics hub in Northern Norway. The port plays a key role in rail-based transport through Sweden along the Ofoten Line/Malmbanan, making it strategically important for Viscaria’s future logistics flows. At the end of 2025, Viscaria signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the German company Aurubis for the delivery of approximately half of the company’s annual copper production between 2028 and 2035. The concentrate delivered to Aurubis will be shipped via the Port of Narvik. At full production, Viscaria is expected to produce around 120,000 tonnes of copper concentrate per year, corresponding to approximately 26,000 tonnes of contained copper. As part of the preparations for future transports, Viscaria’s rail yard will be connected to the Malmbanan on 16 June this year. The agreement underscores copper's strategic importance as a strategic raw material for electrification, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing industries. Through the partnership, Aurubis, a leading global supplier of non-ferrous metals, and Viscaria, a Swedish mining company, strengthen access to reliable and responsibly produced copper for European industry. Viscaria's CEO Jörgen Olsson emphasized the broad significance of the agreement: "This partnership is about more than copper. We are building sustainable resilience for Europe's industries by supplying responsibly produced copper from Sweden, contributing to reducing import dependencies and securing access to strategic raw materials for strength. Aurubis AG's COO Tim Kurth highlighted the strategic alignment: "Copper is crucial for electrification, data centers, and national sovereignty. Today, we also confirmed that Aurubis and Viscaria share the same assessment – to build a partnership from 2027 onwards with a clear focus on sustainability. Also participating in the ceremony was Stefan Rouenhoff, Parliamentary State Secretary at Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, who stated: "By supporting a stable and reliable copper supply, Aurubis and Viscaria contribute significantly to strengthening Europe's economic resilience – crucial for both the energy and digital transition." Sweden's Ambassador to Germany, Veronika Wand Danielsson, added: "Metals have high geopolitical significance and are important for Sweden's and Europe's continued prosperity, as well as having particular importance for the defense sector. With a long history of mining and metal processing, Sweden wants to continue to be at the forefront of innovation-driven and environmentally sustainable mining. The Swedish government recently launched Made with Sweden – a platform that promotes our conviction to create partnerships. Today's signing between Viscaria and Aurubis is a clear expression of this. It is an excellent example of Swedish-German cooperation that can drive Europe's green transition, strengthen our industry, and show how ReSourceEU is put into practice.” The offtake agreement is expected to cover approximately 50 percent of Viscaria's projected copper production over an eight-year period (2028–2035), with an option for extension.
